solaris nevada build 85

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

the home server is back to one cpu as the power draw is too much.

I also bought a new 240 GB ide drive from maplins and moved to solaris build 85 sxde

installation was really quite slick, sunray srss 3.1 installed and configured.

pkg-get cups ghostscript gimpprint

printing wouldn’t work ( remember to put the cups lp and lpr in /usr/bin) complained about

unsupported format. a bit of truss later and there was a file that it couldn’t find psrasterconv?

moved that into the filters directory and everything works…

except that rythmbox now can’t play mp3s..

stuck trying to flash windows mobile 6.0 on my dell axim x51v

I have the “football” A03 roms off the internet and a blank cf card with the 2 files in it but the cf card bootloader won’t list the files.. hardware diagnostics run fine - I found those by accident.

Is it ..

1) the cf card is 4gb

2) the fat32 fileststem comes from a solaris mkfs -F pcfs -o fat=32 command

3) something else ..

I’m going to buy a 1gb cf card and get the emergency PC out of the loft..

Dad, does solaris have a hex editor ?

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Now thats a scary question from a teenager - what are they editing, is it legal?

In fact all he wanted to do was put some control characters into the saved data from COD4 so that his name would be in a different colour. After a bit of mdb -fw he is now dobbin45 in nice teenager black..

His interesting comment was ” if this was windows I could have done it myself!” - ho hum a way to go still..As a species we often base our opinion on one bad event - He didn’t have hexedit so Solaris sucks.. He forgets that he has access to a working computer 100% of the time..

LOWER OLD PARK FARM RESIDENT, VINCE CROWLEY RUNS HIS 14TH
FLORA LONDON MARATHON ON 13 April 2008

Vince Crowley one of the residents on the farm is already training hard
again, to gear himself up for his 14th Flora London Marathon. We are
marking this remarkable occasion by sponsoring him. Vince is an inspiration
to us all and he deserves all our support. He is running in aid of Bells
Piece Cheshire Homes in Farnham. Bells Piece is part of Leonard Cheshire
Disability, a national charity that provides support to people with learning
difficulties.

The home is led by a fantastic team of dedicated staff who work extremely
hard to empower disabled people to live as independently as possible.

The Crondall Brewery is going to be one of Vince’s sponsors this year and
over the next few weeks, there will be opportunities for you to contribute
as well if you wish. If you would like to find out more, please ask the next
time you are in.

Charities like Bells Piece need all the help they can get and I am sure that
together we can make a difference.
